    Open Everything Madison

Wisconsin joins the global conversation about art, science, and spirit of 'open'. Open Everything: A Conversation on Openness, Access and Transparency is a roundtable discussion on the current state of 'open' in the region. Participants come of an array of sectors dealing with various levels and components of 'open' issues, including: technology, education, libraries, journalism, government, philanthropy, arts, nonprofit sector, and more.

    Why?
Open is a game changer. Take a look at the growing revolution around issues of transparency, collaboration, access and inclusion. Libraries and educational institutions have been working on open access and open collaboration issues for a longtime; but current technologies are spearhead the shape and form of openness in unprecidented ways.

Wikipedia and wikis offer a great example of new tools that allow mass contribution, while encouraging collaboration. Open source software offers a great example of new ways in which to be open, to collaborate, and produce products and services of great importance. Openness in media and government are pushing the boundaries of transparency and accountability, exploring what it truly means to be a democracy.

The conversation has spread well beyond the realm of technology. It's about value and values. Where has been? Where is open is headed? Open Everything gathers the people who are charting this new trajectory, and encourages the active collaboration across various work sectors.

    Who?
You! The world's changing, and you're an active agent for its change. Many of us are working with different kinds of 'open' exploring corollary issues: "How do you protect and promote open source in a world of intellectual (IP) property?" "How did 'open spaces' morph or mash into 'co-working'?" "How do you encourage community and civic engagement on local, regional, national, and even global issues and events?" "How does access to research effect university rankings?" and so much more.

    Why?
Madison, Wisconsin, the Mid-West, the United States. The time was right to bring the conversation to the heartland. With the recent presidential elections pushing openness, collaboration, technology, and a higher level of transparency to the forefront of the public mind; Madison decided to join the world stage of Open Everything.

    When?
10am to 5pm, Saturday, 6 December 2008. Capitol Conference Room AB, Grainger Hall, University of Wisconsin-Madison, 975 University Avenue, Madison, Wisconsin.

    How?
This is a free event, with limited space availability, please RSVP your attendance. We will be confirming attendance, and place overspill on our mailing list for our Spring/Summer 2009 Conference. Facebook Users not on Facebook? RSVP Here.

This event is jointly sponsored by OMG! Open Madison Group, Nonprofit Tech, and the UW Madison Students for a Free Culture. Additional co-sponsors will be announced at the event.

This event is a sister event to 'Open Everything: Hong Kong' and 'Open Everything: Berlin'. Three (3) cities, three (3) countries, three (3) same day events. Join us in participating in the Global Conversation.

Curious how other groups can get involved in the Open Everything movement.

    Thanks.

Well, if you're in New York, you might be in luck. UNICEF contacted the group known as the Open Gang about doing an Open Everything.

Here are some places that might be of use to you:

    http://groups.google.com/group/open-everything-discuss
    http://openeverything.wik.is

Mark Surman, the Executive Director of the Mozilla Foundation, is the guy really making all of this happen in a coherent way. If you ping the Google Groups list, you'll get him. You can also shoot an e-mail to gang@openeverything.net.

I'd also suggest starting a thread in the NY Loco forum here. Let me know if you do and I can subscribe to that thread.

ok, looking back at your info, I see you are in Rochester, so the NYC group may or may not be of interest to you. Everything else I told you remains the same though!

I think if the NY LoCo got something going they would likely hold it in Syracuse -- middle of the state and not in New York City... I started a thread in the NY LoCo Forums.

    Re: Open Everything Madison

Seems I didn't post in this thread about our April event. Oops.

Well, we are having our third OE event on October 31st (maybe Nov 1) but the official date for the worldwide event is October 31st. Cities participating are

    # San Francisco, CA, USA
    # Washington, DC, USA
    # New York, NY, USA
    # Toronto, Canada
    # Montreal, Canada
    # Madison, WI, USA
    # Berlin, Germany
    # Delhi, India
    # London, UK
    # Ann Arbor, MI, USA
    # Madrid, Spain
    # Innsbruck, Austria

I hope to get Milwaukee and Chicago involved in the future, but that doesn't look likely for October.

    Re: Open Everything Madison

Just to give an update to this, it looks like we will be focusing on Open Access this time. We do not have a venue yet, but we are thinking either potentially at UW or at the Verona Public Library. I will post details when we get them, but as usual the identi.ca group will get the info first.
