I am liking the new version of Ubuntu, but the low volume really stinks.
I am having to turn all volume controls to 'max' just to hear things. Can anyone share what is going on?
Thank you

same problem
In terminal try "alsamixer" and see what volume is set on.
The volume on my laptop is not loud but can be heard. The speaker is not, I am sure, made to be like my desktop speakers and especially as loud as my Fender Princeton 650 amp.

I'm having the same problem:
8.10 Kubuntu, SB Audigy LS (CA0106), Intel IEC958 onboard disabled.
Using PulseAudio, straight ALSA had the same problem.
Using alsamixer everything is turned up, but if I push the Analog volume too high the sound playback is scratchy.
My hardware volume does absolutely nothing.
Amarok, xine, mplayer all have the problem.
Look at the following links and try.

Do an advanced search for "sound low". That is what I did to help you out.

Make sure all secondary controls, e.g. PCM are set to 100% from the volume control. You can set them by right-clicking on the speaker icon in the system tray.
Lucid Beta 2 powered Studio 15 (Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz, 3 GB RAM, HD 3450) & Windows XP powered Scaleo E (Celeron D 3.06GHz, 1.5GB RAM, Intel GMA 915G). Please see Ubuntu Tutorials (my YouTube channel).

Advanced searches are also a good way to locate answers. They require a bit more time but can save you posting questions and waiting for the answers sometimes.
I also had this problem after upgrading from 8.04 to 8.10 on my dell m1330 laptop and alasamixer didn't work but this did though:
Set all relevant levels to 100%, the one responsible for my sound was the front, which can be added through preferences.Code:gnome-volume-control
Hello all again,
I'm using Kubuntu, so I do not have the same utilities that everyone has mentioned for gnome.
Additionally, even though lsmod shows snd_pcm, I do not have PCM selections in Kmix, Alsamix. Weird.
