    Perhaps you can try this:

    1. Install Thunderbird
    2. Install this plugin for Thunderbird and get all your mail from Hotmail: http://webmail.mozdev.org/
    3. Import all your contacts from Hotmail to Thunderbird: http://gmail.google.com/support/bin/...07799662499472
    4. Get yourself a new Gmail and add it to Thunderbird
    5. Mail all your friends and tell them about your new email adr.
    5. Use Thunderbird to check if people still use the old Hotmail adr.(and warn them if they do) and use Gmail as your main adr.

It looks like I'm going to have to admit defeat and switch to gmail anyway. Lots of hassle with telling everyone and setting up contact list though!
    Setting up your contact list would be straight forward, the new hotmail lets you import & export your contacts list into a csv file format, same for gmail; so moving your contact list is straightforward.

    Right, I now have a gmail account and am very happy with it

    Woo! I'm from Cambridge (uk) too... (Not the university though, which I suspect you both are.) Just moved to London a few weeks ago and really miss Cams.

    To get Hotmail to work, apparently, you can change your "vendor" value to "Firefox" and it lets you in and works fine.

    Here's how:
    type "about:config" into the Awesome Bar, press enter.
    In the filter, type "vendor"
    Double click on "general.useragent.vendor" and change the value to "Firefox".
    Click OK, try Hotmail.

    Don't forget to change it back for visiting other sites. Give Ubuntu credit.

    you don't have to make a flash cutover - just get a new gmail account, then go to someone's windows machine, log into hotmail, and configure your hotmail to forward all your email to your new gmail account, that way none of your friends have to change their stuff. the only downside is that you still have to find a windows machine to look at your old emails stored on hotmail.

I couldn't even open my emails this time, whereas before I could open them but not type in the main text field on a new message. Then, from another suggestion, I tried going to about:config and changing the general.useragent.vendor from Ubuntu to Firefox. This did nothing, but when I went back into about:config it had automatically changed itself back to Ubuntu. Either this method doesn't work at all, or I need to find a way to make it stay saying Firefox (or firefox with lower case 'f', whichever one works!). Any suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.
    Dear Angelic_fruitcake.

    I found for me a solution to prevent Firefox reverting back to Ubuntu in general.useragent.vendor.
    Open as root (sudo nautilus) the text file usr/lib/firefox-3.0.3/defaults/preferences/ubuntu-useragent.js and change in the line:

    pref ("general.useragent.vendor", "Ubuntu");
    to
    pref ("general.useragent.vendor", "Firefox");

    close and save text file

    worked fine for me
    Cheers
