    No sound

Upgraded from 8.04 LTS to 8.10 hoping the sound problem has been corrected.

NOT SO, still no start-up sound, then went to Youtube and still NO SOUND????

Have a swappable rack system, one HD with Ubuntu (my every day working Distro), one HD with, now, PCLinuxOS (use this HD to try out other distros) and third one with Xp Prof.

To try Live DVDs I remove rack HD.

In all these other setups (PCLinuxOS, Xp Prof. and Live DVDs) the sound works fine!

    What gives?????

Have I got too many installed and need to remove some, but why no initial start-up sound?

    Have:

    Amarok
    Movie Player
    MPlayer Movie Player
    Real Player 10
    Rhythembox Music Player
    VLC Media Player

Also could not, previously, activate Java this appears to be OK now.

Can you hear the startup sound when you manually play it in sound prefs for example

    Re: No sound

On your tray, double click on sound icon to open the utility.
    You should see:
    Master, PCM, etc...
Check if PCM is all the way up. If not,put it all the way up. Then put master halfway the bar.
Check if BOTH bars on PCM are up.

Sounds silly, but it fixed it for me O___O I kept putting "master" up, and no sound, because PCM was all the way down! How was I supposed to know?
