Question [SOLVED] 8.10 External monitor screen resolution problem

I've just upgraded to 8.10 from 8.04 on my Panasonic Let's Note CF-R4. I use an external monitor, and can now dual-head, which I couldn't before. Woot!

But, the native resolution of the external monitor no longer shows up in the screen resolution config applet. I was using 1280x1024, but now the closest options are 1024x768 or 1360x768 (which is fugly).

Has anyone experienced a similar problem, or have any suggestions how to fix this?

    Here are the relevant lines from lspci;

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller (rev 03)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller (rev 03)

    Thanks in advance

Re: 8.10 External monitor screen resolution problem

    Solved.

    Edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

    Find the Screen section - mine looked like this;

    Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Configured Screen Device"
    Device "Configured Video Device"
    SubSection "Display"
    Virtual 2384 768
    EndSubSection
    EndSection

Delete the "Virtual* line and save the file. Then logout to restart xorg. I had my external monitor plugged in, at this point, which is almost certainly necessary.

After xorg restarts, go to the screen resolution applet and (in my case), the correct resolutions appear.

I have the same problem, same graphics card. I don't, however, have that virtual line in my xorg.conf. But still have the problem.

    My xorg.conf look like this
    Code:
    Section "Device"
            Identifier "Configured Video Device"
    EndSection

    Section "Monitor"
            Identifier "Configured Monitor"
    EndSection

    Section "Screen"
            Identifier "Default Screen"
            Monitor "Configured Monitor"
            Device "Configured Video Device"
    EndSection
I just get 1024x768 with a monitor that did 1600x1200 properly in hardy heron.

Totally fresh install, haven't touched anything....

Highest resolution that I can find in the Screen Resolution tool is 1024x768.

Have a Dell 20" flat screen connected with DVI, using my DELL laptop's docking station....

Re: 8.10 External monitor screen resolution problem

I just tried the 'xfix' solution that was suggested in another thread.

That didn't work for me :-/

Re: 8.10 External monitor screen resolution problem

    I tried:
    Code:
     xrandr --output TMDS-1 --mode 1600x1200
That did work for me, but I don't think that I should have to pull of stunts like this. It should detect the proper resolution by itself. I don't like workarounds....

    xrandr also report
    Code:
    Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1680 x 1680
VGA disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

       720x400 70.1

Which clearly shows that my monitor do report it's resolution properly...

Re: 8.10 External monitor screen resolution problem

See the X resolution fixing documentation.

posterberg: It's probable that your monitor needs an EDID quirk; please attach /var/log/Xorg.0.log, the output of 'xrandr --verbose' and your monitor's model details.

Re: 8.10 External monitor screen resolution problem

Actually, please install read-edid, run 'sudo get-edid > /tmp/getedid.dat', and attach that file here. It's binary, so don't try to copy and paste.

Re: 8.10 External monitor screen resolution problem

OK, so that all looks fine.

Glancing over the X server's code, it seems that on startup it should by default pick the biggest resolution that works on all attached displays. This looks like fairly normal behaviour.

You can cause the correct resolution to be set on login using System->Preferences->Screen Resolution.
