Hi,
Yesterday I tried to upgrade 8.04 to 8.10. Everything went well until I had to restart my computer. Instead of showing the login screen, it showed nothing (no signal to monitor). I do hear the login sound when I login.
I've had this problem before, and I don't exactly know how I fixed it back then. I tried things like dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg etc, but that didn't seemed to work. But one day, it just worked (?).
Now I guess the problem is with my graphicscard, which is from ATI (HD3870). So I tried removing the ATI driver and EnvyNG, which I used to install the driver in the first place. This is probably the point were I messed up things, since I'm quite a beginner to Ubuntu/Linux.
I used the following commands as far as I remember in root command line (recovery mode):
- dpkg -l | grep fglrx
- dpkg --remove (did this with every package returned by the above command)
- dpkg --purge xorg-driver-fglrx-envy
- dpkg -l | grep envy
- dpkg --remove (did this with every package returned by the above command)
After that, I tried using xfix in Recovery Mode and using dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, but without success.
So I decided to do a clean Ubuntu installation. But instead of showing me the installation dialogs when I select Install, it gives the black screen again, after the loading splash.
The Check CD option says the CD is fine. Anybody knows what to do?
