    Question Fallout3 on wine?

    Hey all

I wouldnt be surprised if this has already been posted a thousand times (sorry if it has) but I was just wondering how long it takes for a brand new game to become wine-compatible? I did a little research and it doesnt look like much progress has been made but I wanted to get everyone's opinion.

I have never used wine before but Fallout 3 would be the game to get me onboard
NEVER under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES use the commands: sudo rm -rf or rm -rf unless you know EXACTLY what you are doing! These commands will permanently erase data on your computer!

Oblivion runs acceptably with Nvidia cards and with a native directx dll

Fallout 3 uses the same engine, and its progress should mirror Oblivion's pretty soon.

Hopefully newer ATI drivers will fix the problem for the rest of us. I wouldn't expect any progress soon though, because I have been waiting awhile.

Fallout 3 looks great, probably going to be as good as the first two, and it is like THE game I am waiting for years.

I can wait if I must, but if they could get crossover working sooner, I wounldn't mind resume my account.

    Re: Fallout3 on wine?

Well I just got fallout3 and installed it with the newest version of wine. It installs and then seems to run fine except for one big caveat. The mouse refuses to work it just gets stuck in the middle of the screen with a case of Parkinson's or something. I never tried oblivion before so I will now have to find out which dll is needed to run oblivion. I will post back if I make any progress.

    Any news?

Looks like the mouse bug is fixable, but the apparently, the game still not playable.

More information checkout Wine AppDB, lots of testing already going on there.

No, I have not gotten further. Before even having the fix for the mouse issue I found that trying to start a new game just hung.

It's not looking good for now, and I really wanted to play the game. Spending 3 hours trying to get it to run was enough. The game is so much fun. I am truly enjoying the updated version of fallout. It's first person but the feel of the Fallout series has not been lost in my opinion and the graphics look great. So for now I will need to use windows or some gaming needs. I hate it but I don't have a choice for now.

We need to petition a company to port it to Nix. Bethesda says they will not port it but they will let someone else port it if they want to.

i would buy the game again if someone would port it.

    Re: Fallout3 on wine?

I read the winappdb entry for F3.
I have the game but haven't installed it yet.

One piece of info I picked up is related to the securom disc check.
Installing the game from setup.exe rather than the installer may circumvent the securom install.
Either way, starting the game from fallout.exe rather than the falloutlauncher circumvents the disc check, all without a crack.

My sis was able to play discless in Winxp32 by starting from fallout.exe rather than using the launcher.

I'll test this at some point unless someone beats me to it.
I'd venture to guess that securom is not good for wine in any case.
