OK blacklisting rt2800usb worked for me as well...

Karmic seems to try and load rt2870sta AND rt2800usb, and I can't get rt2800usb to work.

Put the line 'blacklist rt2800usb' in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf and you should be able to use wireless.
    Code:
    :~$ iwconfig
    lo no wireless extensions.

    eth1 no wireless extensions.

              Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
    but "Bit Rate=54 Mb/s"

Making progress but what have I missed?

Well, thanks to Razor's wiki this only wasted two hours of my weekend.
    Observations:
    1. The wiki works well for Hardy however the downloaded make file did not work this time round. Somehow the libraries weren't found. However, I followed the instructions to change the original ralink make file and then it worked fine.

    2. I somehow messed things up after I'd got it working I'm not sure if that was to do with installing from a multi-user pc or what.
I got out of the mess by copying the source files to my opt folder before compiling (instead of a user's home), following the whole process until "Networkmanager should see your available networks within one minute.". At that point I waited a minute or two before rebooting (even though wlan hadn't reacted) without trying out the mount/unmount instructions. After the boot everything works ok for all pc users.

Many thanks Razor for this wiki,
    Alan

Re: Install linux drivers for ralink rt2870

    Hi,

I seem to be getting the same problems as verto8 in earlier posts. My Belkin N+ (F5D8055 v1) wireless adapter in which I just bought the other day from Play.com is not being recognized in iwconfig or ifconfig.

I am using the latest drivers downloaded from the ralink mentioned in the earlier posts and have renamed the old rt2870sta.ko to rt2879sta.ko.old.

    Code:
    lsmod | grep rt2
    rt2870sta 544364 0

    modprobe -v rt2870sta
    insmod /lib/modules/2.6.28-15-generic/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/rt2870sta.ko

    lsusb
Bus 001 Device 011: ID 050d:825a Belkin Components

    dmesg | grep rt2
usbcore: registered new interface driver rt2870
I have noticed that when I remove the usb adapter and replace it I get this -
    Code:

    dmesg
[ 4098.100020] usb 1-1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 10
    [ 4098.248214] usb 1-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
There seems to be no sign of registering it as a rt2870 device or a wireless device, or is this correct?

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

    Btw, I am using kubuntu 9.04 KDE 4.3, i386 - kernel 2.6.28-15-generic

Question Re: Install linux drivers for ralink rt2870

I have posted a bug report on launchpad.

Karmic RC tries to load rt2870sta AND rt2800usb. Results in no WiFi

    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...ux/+bug/460323

Karmic seems to try and load rt2870sta AND rt2800usb.
    Breaks wireless connectivity.
Worked in Ubuntu 9.04 - Jaunty.

    Confirmed Workaround:
Put the line 'blacklist rt2800usb' in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf and you are able to use wireless.

Well that doesn't work for me unfortunately.

I'm using 9.10 x64 (final release) with an Edimax 7718Un USB adapter.

I've subscribed to you launchpad bud report in the hope that this is fixed sometime soon...

Re: Install linux drivers for ralink rt2870

I think one part of the problem is, that the 2870 module is at V 1.4.0.0 only (the actual one on ralink website is 2.2...). For example, my USB ID of my device (Buffalo WLI--UC-G300N isn't included yet in this version, however by default in 2.2

As a result, even after blacklisting I won't be able to connect as the correct driver won't be loaded.

There is only one way to get that working in my eyes: we need to be able to compile the original ralink source which won't compile at the moment. Unfortunately, I don't neither why nor how to fix it...

I hope either Ralink or Ubuntu will provide us with an updated version very soon - and in the meantime I wouldn't mind some geeky work-arounds if anybody has one to share!

    Nick

In theory could I swap out my usb adapter for a wireless access point connected via ethernet (and therefore not requiring drivers)?

Re: Install linux drivers for ralink rt2870

    Hi Guys!

Would just like to confirm I have D-Link DWA-140 working by adding 'rt2800usb' to the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf - then adding rt2870sta to /etc/modules.

    Cheers!

Well that didn't work unfortunately. I'm contributing to the related bug over at:

    Any other ideas appreciated!
