PPC or Intel in this forum? Or both?

There is going to be a Forum Council Meeting (information is in a link in the second link).

I proposed, a seemingly well supported idea, to have a forum for many different Arch's (renaming the Sparc forum) which each arch having a different prefix. Part of this proposal is a PPC prefix and making this forum for Intel Macs.

I would like your input (preferably, at the meeting, but on either thread, or here would be fine).

Do you think this forum needs to have PPC and Intel separated? Do you think PPC Macs would be good as part of the "Alternative Platforms" proposal of mine?

When the Apple forum's were merged, many where unhappy with the combination of PPC and Intel Macs without any differentiation in the forums. Has this attitude changed?

Yes. It probably should be. I, as a user of a PPC dual-boot, hate searching how to do something, only to find "Intel Mac this, Intel Mac that". Sorry if that was a little mean, but you know what I mean(pardon the pun). Or, maybe intel and ppc as subcatagories.

i still think that the 'apple users' forum is too noisy for powerpc chat. (the sparc people might feel the same if powerpc moved in with them).

there is also lots of powerpc hardware that is not made by apple.

to me a ports forum seems a good compromise.

there was a lot of discussion when the powerpc and apple-intel forums were merged http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4861572 and it was raised in a forums irc meeting before.

That's probably true. I posted something about triple-booting my PowerBook G4, and whoosh, in 3 hours it's past the first page thing on a 1024X768 moniter. Ports might be a good idea.

I think they ought to be separate. It makes it easier to find stuff.

Most definitelywould be a good idea. As an owner of a g4 mac and a ps3 I would love streamline my searches without having to sift through threads trying to find one that works for "my" chipset

For me separating the apple forums section seems to be a good idea. After both apple sections were merged, it was very hard to follow the ppc-related problems, because - as supposed by the ppc crowd after merging the sections - nobody uses the ppc- and intel-prefixes. For the apple section IMHO the whole prefix-thing has no effect. Almost everyone is using "ubuntu", this doesn't increase clarity a bit.

The only thing which merges apple-intel and ppc users is the proprietary os. E.g. if there are questions like "how to access my hfs+ volume from ubuntu". But on the hardware-side the two platforms have very less in common. In fact the mactel-platform is a special case of x86-hardware. To solve problems with ubuntu on ppc-hardware, or at least to know what packages are necessary or available for ppc, or how to install ubuntu on ppc, no ppc-user has to follow the communication about mactel-related problems.

I would be glad to have an alternative platform section. Hopefully there it would be evident, that a thread-starter has to use the right prefix for his particular architecture...
