Want to circumvent Firewall

I am working in China right now and must face the reality of operating behind the great firewall of China. For accessing web pages that are blocked I simply open them through a proxy server. github is blocked over here. I am trying to access github through the terminal but this will not work. Is there a way I can set the terminal to run through a proxy server?
