Try logging out and logging back in I remember that after I installed compiz I had to do this before it would let me check/uncheck settings.

Mine is doing this too. Mine reverts from custom back to normal. I have no idea what else I can do. I have simple + advanced compiz manager installed and I have the latest driver installed from nvidia via envygtk.

    I have a nvidia 9600gt and I'm running ubuntu hardy 64 bit.
