    Video playback frame rate sluggish

I have a Dell Studio XPS 16 Laptop with a ATI 4650 graphics card running Ubuntu 11.10. Performance running any sort of video seems noticeably more sluggish than on windows. Particularly in full screen mode the frame rate seems low. The problem is worst on flash based video but also noticeable just playing movies in VLC or Totem.

I'm using the fglrx drivers downloaded from the ATI site. Does anybody have any suggestions for improving performance? Thanks!

Have you tried the open source drivers? https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonDriver

Just given them a go but that seems to have made it even worse, thanks though.
