How to initialize printer in ubuntu?

I use to shut down printer, I only start it when I need it. When I am in ubuntu, and then I turn on printer. Ubuntu doesnt recognize, that it is turned on. And I must restart PC and leave printer turned on to let ubuntu recognize it. How to initialize it without restarting system?
    Thanks

did you set up the printer you-self or was it a automatic setup?
what I do is remove the automatic ubuntu printer setup in system » administration » printers and do my own HP printer setup
I just plugin the power socket when I need to print something, works every-time.
