GStreamer "Failed to connect stream: invalid argument"

I noticed a similar thread earlier, but it had no responses so I made one with a more straightforward title.

This error occurs in some form or another in any program that uses gstreamer (tested totem, rhythmbox, songbird) while the same media files will work just fine in VLC.

A gst-launch-0.10 playbin uri="file://[...]" command in the terminal returns:

    Code:
    Setting pipeline to PAUSED ...
    Pipeline is PREROLLING ...
ERROR: from element /playbin0/abin/audiosink/audiosink-actual-sink-pulse: Failed to connect stream: Invalid argument
    Additional debug info:
    pulsesink.c(411): gst_pulsesink_prepare (): /playbin0/abin/audiosink/audiosink-actual-sink-pulse
ERROR: pipeline doesn't want to preroll.
    Setting pipeline to NULL ...
    FREEING pipeline ...
Other programs, when run in the terminal, bring up identical errors (though formatted differently).

Has anyone found a solution for when this occurs? Sadly I haven't written down what changes I may have made between when it was working and now. My gut reaction is to say I didn't change anything, and that's how I remember it, but I must've changed something. Any thoughts?
