    Great howto

I'm almost there but I can't seem to access the internet from my lan. All my pc's get an ip and can talk to each other as well as the server/router. The server has internet access but for some reason I can't get it to forward internet traffic from my lan I've tried dns and ip's nothing gets out. By the way most of my lan consists of windows pc's if that makes a difference. Any help or ideas will be greatly appreciated.

    Thx Preston

    Hi

Thank for the guide but i am in a world of difficulties!!! Got past the 127.0.1.1 thing. Sorted out the missing DHCP server module... but I am now stuck fast.

I can't get the DHCP server to run. I have followed the instructions to the letter but all I get is bad range address 192.168.0.100 is not in subnet 192.168.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0.

Could you tell me what I'm doing wrong? Because I'm obviously doing something!

I want to get this working!!!

    Cheers

    Hi

Got up this morning and finally got it sorted!

I edited out the range and just left [blank] - 182.168.0.254 and it works now!

Now on to the fun bit

    Cheers

Hi, i followed your howto and it works perfectly.
But, iam trying to get xbox live to work but it fails on a MTU check. The MTU actually is high enough but there seems to be a problem with the router not handling ICMP xbox wants it to.

Anyone got a clue what i can do about it?

( I opened up a topic to but it seems more logical to post it here.

Thanks for this tutorial - it works without any question.

One point to note for all users who are moving from Windows is to make sure that you don't experiment this within the network that has the ISA firewall. It doesn't work - I think - because the address translation gets blocked at the ISA level - just connect the eth_BAD to the broadband connection and that's it.

I also would suggest you switch off all the windows clients and any linux clients so that they all get fresh IPs. If you'd like the linux machines to be available on windows - just share a folder using samba and it works...

Re: Howto: Set up Ubuntu as a firewall/gateway router with webmin

Thanks a million for this thread, as it has worked perfectly. However, during a recent snow storm we lost power and after I got all machines back up and running, the router doesn't seem to be handing out IP addresses to the network.

The router can connect to the internet, but the network cannot connect to the router. I deletes most of the components created by this tutorial then re-started the tutorial from the beginning and everything seems to go fine, but Im still not issuing ip addresses to the network.

In Webmin under Others, Server Status monitoring shows the BIND DNS and DHCP servers as down, and if I start them, I do not get errors, but the monitors still show them as down.

My next step is to replace my network facing network adapter, but other than that I'm stuck.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Something else that should probably be saved before starting this procedure is the file /etc/network/interfaces. That is,

    sudo cp /etc/network/interfaces /etc/network/interfaces.bak

This file sets up your network at boot time, and webmin modifies it. I foolishly agreed to changing the address of my external interface, which changed this file, telling it the external interface had a static address, when in fact the internet supplier gave me a dynamic address.

This totally shut down the network when I next rebooted. I stumbled on to the fact that the above file had been changed, and of course, couldn't talk to the outside world.

This is a pretty good tutorial, and the only one that's worked for me. It's a bit dated, though, and needs to be updated for ubuntu 9.10. I'd do it, but a networking specialist I am not.
