Maybe the easiest thing to do here is just to reinstall. I'm not sure where else to look--I don't know how to force X to create a larger display--but if you've already gone to the trouble of hooking this machine up to a monitor, it would only take you half an hour to reinstall Ubuntu.

As for Intel, you mean integrated right? How do I know if my motherboard uses integrated intel graphics, do basically all of them
If you run the command 'lspci' it will list all the hardware devices on your machine, including graphics cards. If you see a line that looks like:

VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller
then you have Intel graphics. Not all motherboards have them, but many do.
