[SOLVED] proprietory driver for intel GM965/GL960?

got this new laptop that has an integrated intel GM965/GL960 graphics card. it seems to handle basic 3d effects such compiz' effects and gl screensavers. however, when trying to play the odd game it can be quite slow.

when i first install ubuntu, is it using an open source driver?
is there a proprietary driver avaiable?
    is there something im missing?

There is no proprietary driver for intel cards - only the intel-supported, open-source drivers exist.

I should add that intel graphics cards aren't really made for gaming, you'll never see the same performance you see from ati/nvidia cards.

Re: [SOLVED] proprietory driver for intel GM965/GL960?

I had the same question about the intel gm965/gl960 card...and I did notice something re: performance. Subjectively, it seems that performance has improved by actually increasing the number of effects to "extra" under system -> preferences -> appearance.

Though I won't be playing the most recent Quake game on my Laptop, the gui does seem more responsive during regular interaction with X, which is what I use the system for mostly.

Another glimmering sense of hope, there are some old 2d windows games from antiquity that I would like to play, that I think could run on just fine on this 2d card...so I guess in a sense this intel card can still play games, just not 3d intensive games...

Something else worth noting, I wouldn't mind playing Quake 1...I wonder if it runs on Linux, I do remember some pretty cool mods being out for Quake...incidentally, I found this link http://linux.omnipotent.net/article....ticle_id=11261 re quake.
