    Ubuntuforums Massive Holiday Giveaway!

Lasy year, I offered to send out Ubuntu CDs to people who had not ordered through shipit early enough to receive them before the hollidays. People answered and I sent some out.

This year, I would like to do that again.

As well, I have a lot of stuff that I can give away, too, like sound cards and other hardware (people give me their broken computers, for some reason). Postage for small packages is relatively cheap. I figure for about fifteen bucks, I can clean up my hardware that is collecting dust and put those pieces to good use.

You can mail ram pretty easily, for example.

Little things we throw away in North America can probably make a big difference elsewhere in the world.

So, who else wants to make someone's holiday and give away stuff?

If there are enough people who answer, I will make a wiki page or something where we can post what we got so that people can ask for them.

    Example Ref:
    http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=90109

    So, Who's in?

EDIT: Go straight to the wiki page in question:

    https://wiki.ubuntu.com/forum/GiveAway

(You have to accept the self-signed certificate, if this is the first time you visit the wiki or launchpad.)

Great idea, azz. I assume that the idea is not to give some middleclass North American like me cheap stuff, but the get it into the hands of people in real need?

Wonderful idea, I wish I had parts to give away and help, but I'm all out, I have nothing I can send off

I'd love to give some parts, but... if I did that, my computer wouldn't work anymore sorry...

EDIT: Actually, my school will be selling off some old computer bits soon... they come from the old workstations. Nothing brilliant, but I might get one or two to upgrade my shabby old box. If I then have any parts left I will gladly send them off. Also, since any bits and bobs I get will most likely replace current things in my old box, there will then be some parts anyway

EDIT: How exactly will this system work? I don't fully understand from that first post...

Well, you do not have to give computer parts. How about burning off a cd and sending that do someone who is either only on dialup or does not have a burner?

As to whom will get this, it is up to you.

Can I assume that the others who have answered to this thread will contribute something?

The way that it works, for example, is say BWF89 and xsequence want to send off five cds each. Let's say that Canadianwriter man will offer a 3Gig hard drive and a stick of 64 megs of ram as well as a few cds.

We make a wiki page about this. On that page, the donors can put the list of offerings as well as an email address by which they can be reached. For example, I have a yahoo.ca free email account for things like this.

When someone asks you for something and you agree to send it to them, you edit your entry on the wiki page to reflect that. So BWF89 would change the number of cds to 4, after he sends the first one off. And so on.

We get a lot of people to add to the page and let's say it gets Slashdotted... It would really promote the spirit of the ubuntu community.

Probably some people will ask for stuff when they could really afford it themselves, but I have a pile of stuff that I cannot use at the moment and it probably could do someone (or a few different people) a lot of good. I am not going to let the potential for this stuff to be sent to the wrong people let this stuff just sit there and benefit nobody.

    So, what have you got?

(I probably can make a cd with all the xubuntu and edubuntu packages.)

    Two things we need:

Wiki page, linked in the first post
    This thread, sticky.

Seriously, it'll be much easier to keep track of things if there's a wiki page. People can edit it themselves and tell what they need or what they have.
