Can see wireless networks but can't connect

I am using the Broadcom BCM4311 wireless card in my HP dv2000 laptop and I am having trouble connecting to wireless access points. I can see wireless networks but I can not connect to them. I have tried using WEP, WPA, WPA2, and no encryption at all and still nothing and I know its not my router because I have tried at many friends places and still have the same problem. However I am able to connect to the wireless at my school(They use WPA2). I am a major linux noob and could really use some help please.
