Question Ubuntu on 120GB WinXP version of Acer Aspire One?

I'd like to install Ubuntu on my brand spanking new Acer Aspire One. I bought the version with WinXP because I wanted the 120GB HD. I do not have a USB cdrom, so it'll have to be installed either from the WinXP partition or from a USB key. Wading through the various forums has left me with a couple of unanswered questions (probably because I overlooked the posts with the answers), so here goes:

    1. Will installing grub in the MBR mess up the recovery partition on the HD? If so, what's the best work-around?

    2. Will cursor keys, sound, suspend to disk, webcam, and wireless all work properly? Wireless and scrolling in an xterm don't work for me in Puppy Linux on the Aspire One.

Constructive advice will be greatly appreciated.

all I can tell you that I'm running ubuntu since gutsy and never had a problem neither with grub nor the rest of the items you wrote, except for the web cam - I don't have one.

I also purchased an Acer Aspire One with XP, 120GB HD and 1GB ram. I did not even boot windows, and instead hooked up a USB CD-ROM drive and loaded the Ubuntu 8.04.1 CD. The install worked perfect. then I followed the Guide posted here:

    and all has been great!

That site is great for getting it up and running. Also you may want to install the Remix, but fair warning it is different. I like it after I played with it. But it's easy to go back to your old desktop. Also one thing that wasn't on there is to disable compiz. You can install Ubuntu with a Flash Drive using this guide.

Ubuntu works great with Acer Aspire One. It does have some issues still, but it will be worked out. One is no sensors work and some other sound issues with sleep mode.

I split my drive in too with the install of Ubuntu. My wife still will not try Linux because of school stuff, but hey her loss. Also, just to let you know I did have one issue where my Laptop wouldn't boot again and just went to a black screen. This is not a problem with Ubuntu, but a known issue with Bios and you have to use a flash drive to fix it. I will get the address and post it just in case this happens to you.

hey jcmorris, it appears i am having those BIOS problems after a live update on my aspire one. Do you have that page for the solution? The system just wont even attempt to boot.

Follow this to get your Bios out of brick mode. Takes all of 3 min's to complete. jcmorris
