Ubuntu one, startup sound and visual assistance are candidates that can be removed from the startup list. Another tricks to speed up ubuntu boot is to set the CONCURRENCY to shell which makes linux use all available cores for booting.

The CONCURRENCY trick may work for some but on my AMD 6 core it makes absolutely no difference.
