    Re: Atheros ar928x working...

Thanks for the reply pytheas22 .

I wasn't sure if I had installed the jaunty package you specified, so I did, and it appears as if my wireless is not recognized anymore (No scan results for iwlist). Here the updated outputs:

    Re: Atheros ar928x working...

mj_bell: sorry for the slow response.

It looks like the ath9k module isn't being loaded at all. Do you have it blacklisted (if so, the file /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf would contain a line reading 'ath9k')? Or maybe it's just not being modprobed. What happens if you type:
    Code:
    lsmod | grep ath
    sudo modprobe ath9k
    dmesg | tail -30
    lshw -C Network

    Re: Atheros ar928x working...

no mention of ath9k in blacklist.conf - and no apparent blacklisting of any wireless specific modules (but can show you file if you wish?)

With regard to the output you wished for:

lsmod | grep ath - Gives no output

    sudo modprobe ath9k, gives:

    Code:

    Re: Atheros ar928x working...

Ah, the error message you receive when you try to modprobe ath9k explains a lot. Do you still get that message if you reboot the computer, then type again:
    Code:
    sudo modprobe ath9k
Usually this 'invalid module format' stuff clears up after a reboot.

    Re: Atheros ar928x working...

Afraid I'm still getting the message after a reboot:

    Code:
WARNING: Error inserting lbm_cw_mac80211 (/lib/modules/2.6.28-15-generic/updates/lbm_cw-mac80211.ko): Invalid module format
FATAL: Error inserting ath9k (/lib/modules/2.6.28-15-generic/updates/ath9k.ko): Invalid module format
Could it maybe be worth re-installing Ubuntu and then seeing what modprobe ath9k gives?

    Re: Atheros ar928x working...

Yes, please now install the backports package (and make sure your system is up-to-date) by typing:

    Code:
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get upgrade
    sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-jaunty
Then reboot. If it still doesn't work, please post:
    Code:
    lsmod | grep ath
    sudo modprobe ath9k
    dmesg | grep -e ath -e wlan
    uname -r

    Re: Atheros ar928x working...

I've installed the januty package (I think last time I installed the wrong one, didn't use backports?)

Anyway, still no luck - but it hasn't disappeared off the iwlist scan, which is a good sign I guess. As for the outputs:

    lsmod | grep ath:

    Code:
    ath9k 282420 0
    lbm_cw_mac80211 227492 1 ath9k

    lbm_cw_cfg80211 73888 2 ath9k,lbm_cw_mac80211
    sudo modprobe ath9k: No Output.

    dmesg | grep -e ath -e wlan:

    Re: Atheros ar928x working...

Thanks for the information. I guess the linux-backports-modules-jaunty package didn't help you like it did the others in this thread.

I've done some more googling and suspect your issue is the same as the one described in this bug report. If you have bluetooth, try disabling that and see if it helps. If not, please post the output of:
    Code:
    locate wlan | grep sys
and hopefully we can find the right command to run to force the wireless to turn on, like the others in that bug report.

It might also help to know the make and model of your computer.
