Latitude D630 Laptop Random Freezes - Ubuntu 8.04

Weird Symptoms

Caps Lock and Shift Lock Keys are blinking on and off every time Laptop freezes
Restarting the X-Terminal with ctrl-alt-backspace fails, nothing happens when laptop freezes

I do not know how to reproduce this error, but just randomly, Ubuntu 8.04 just freezes without warning. This can happen when I am booting the laptop, opening the lid to return the laptop from suspension, or just when I am admiring my desktop, Ubuntu freezes, becomes non-responsive and both the caps lock and shift lock lights start to blink. CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE also fails when the laptop freezes, I see no response from the system. Any ideas on how to remedy this situation?


PS: I haven't noticed any problems with normal Windows XP operation.

When you say that it can happen when booting the laptop, at what stage does it occur? After grub? Before login?
Also, I'm assuming you have to turn off the computer and turn it back on again because the keyboard is unresponsive. Do you notice any excess heat before the laptop locks up?

When I select my ubuntu partition to boot from grub, sometimes it freezes when you see the ubuntu logo and the orange progress bar during boot.

I am using kernel 2.6.24-21-generic for the broadcom drivers.

You would be correct in your assumption, but I don't notice a heat spike.
