Question Hardy can't do external monitor (ati radeon igp 340m/345m)

I'm trying to install Hardy on an old laptop (2004-ish) with an ATI Radeon IGP 345m video card (I think, though lspci tells me it's an IGP 340M). It has VGA out, and I have a really nice HP w1907 19-inch monitor which I bought last November.

However, Hardy can't work with this monitor. It's perplexing, because during the Live-CD bootup, Ubuntu uses the external monitor fine. However, once the loading splash screen is finished and Ubuntu logs in, it quits using the external monitor.

I tried dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, but it didn't help. Maybe I missed something important in there.

I tried the same with an Ubuntu 7.04 live-cd, and it uses the monitor right out, however the monitor proportions and text rendering are so god-awful, that I'd really love to give Hardy a try.

Please let me know if you have any advice.

    Thank you.
