    Smile Hi folks!

Just wanted to stop in and introduce myself. I'm Allen and I'm in Opp, AL. I've been messing with Linux since 2000 with various distros. Took a break for a while but have always had a Linux machine around. Got back into it full steam with Gutsy...the moved to Hardy. So far, I have it on four systems in my home including this Dell 1525 laptop and it's working beautifully on all. I loaded Hardy on my daughter's computer a couple days ago. She actually came to me as she was fed up with M$. So far, she's learning quickly and loving it. Her machine flies with Hardy and she's happy. Good enough for me I use my Hardy laptop at work every day (radio station program director) and on my main system at home as well as another older machine in my ham (radio) shack for logging and PSK31 (LinPSK) with a homebrew radio interface.

Hopefully I can pick up some more knowledge and maybe even share some of what I have learned. I'm by no means a Linux guru or IT specialist...just a normal guy loving Ubuntu and wanting to learn enought to be able to give back

    Thanks!
    Allen

Thanks guys! Great to be here!

Just for fun, I offered to install Virtual Box on daughter's computer so she could run XP if she needed any windows apps. She declined Said she didn't need it anymore....at least not right now. Everything she needs is in Hardy....the Transmission BT client, Tasque (for Google calender, etc), Amarok, Gimp, etc. I haven't heard a peep out of her in the days since installing Hardy for her...she's too wrapped up in it learning how to do things. It's nice not to have to hear her whine about the computer being so slow and continually locking up. I built the system for her a few years ago and have upgraded a few of the components over that time (video, hdd, ram). She mainly uses it for music, instant messaging, web surfing, email and d/l from the torrents.

    Later,
    A

PS: if you guys like and want to use an IRC server, my ISP has one running. It's not part of any of the other networks though...pretty much standalone. Server is: irc.oppcatv.com. I hang out there most every evening. Mostly just locals and a few others from surrounding areas. I do realize that Freenode has the Alabama channels on it's network. Just thought I'd mention it. I use the same nick there as I do here.

Hey Allen! That's cool about your daughter. My brother wants to know about it too, but I know how he gets, and I know he would end up getting too mad about something...but it would be nice if he could have an extra computer that he could use to learn on, then he wouldn't get so mad when he couldn't figure something out.

Hopefully I will eventually get him converted!

Well, she did get a bit frustrated the first day trying to get things situated like she wanted. No worries now. I asked her this evening how everything was in the world of Ubuntu. She said it was great and not to worry about Virtual Box. She'll not be needing it. She showed me how she's already got all her music set up in Amarok and I was impressed! I have been using Rhythmbox and until then, was happy with it. But Amarok will do so much more...so I installed it on mine. Very nice app

Set him with the live CD for awhile and let him go. If he likes, set him up a dual-boot system. The conversion will happen on it's on

    Thanks!
    Allen
