putting display to sleep turns of wireless

I have a script that i use

sleep 1 && xset dpms force off

to turn off the monitor when its not in use. This helps me save laptop battery. Also i use the power management option as well to put display to sleep after 2 mintues. The problem with this is that every time display goes to sleep so does my wireless card. My downloads stop. I need to find a way to put the display to sleep while keeping wifi 3945abg alive.
