Having trouble w/ Broadcom on Hardy? Give this a shot

Hi Everyone:

Broadcom has released a driver that supports recent A/B/G/N adapters. The intention of this driver was to support current Dell platforms with Broadcom adapters, but as advertised on their site, it operates with a variety of non-Dell hardware too. This means the 4311, 4312, 4321, 4322, and 4328 adapters. http://www.broadcom.com/support/802.11/linux_sta.php

The Broadcom 4306 has been verified to not work with this.

If you are having trouble w/ b43, or trouble with ndiswrapper please give this driver a try:

To enable it:

1) Fully update your 8.04.1 install.

2) Deactivate any ndiswrapper installed drivers. There should be a remove option for ndiswrapper.

3) Click System->Administration->Hardware Drivers

4) Click the "Broadcom STA wireless driver" in the Hardware Drivers tool.

5) Reboot
Things should work on this next boot. If you have troubles, please open up *another* forum post rather than looking for support in this thread.

If this doesn't work for you and you want to revert back:

1) Open up Hardware drivers again, and "uncheck" the checkbox for "Broadcom STA wireless driver"

Known issues:
1) If you have an ethernet driver supported by ssb/b44, you will not be able to use this

Comments:
The wl driver worked really well, but I have not tested encryption on it yet. I did have to load the module manually though:

When I ran lshw -C network before loading the wl driver, the wireless card showed up, but no driver was listed. The other change that occurred was that the logical name of the card changed from wlan0 to eth1.

Just to make sure that it was the wl driver that was working, I also removed the firmware from /lib/firmware/b43 and /lib/firmware/b43legacy.

The only caution that I want to add is with the blacklisting of ssb. The Broadcom 44xx series ethernet cards (the wired card) use the b44 driver and that needs the ssb driver if I understand correctly. If ssb is blacklisted, I am not for sure if ssb will still load for it and if it does, I am guessing that it might be loaded before the wl driver. I am going to be testing this out shortly on my other laptop.

I'm trying to test this for a 4306 card on Gutsy (this is my only computer with a Broadcom chipsest and it needs to keep running Gutsy for the time being). Since I'm on Gutsy, I'm trying to build the kernel module using the source and directions given on Broadcom's site, instead of following the instructions to install it via the repositories. However I can't get it to build:

Comments: No surprise. This card did not work with the wl module. Even though I did blacklist the ssb module, it did come back again when the b44 module loaded. Most likely a script will be needed like what was done for ndiswrapper so that the ssb module is loaded after the wl module (modified script based on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wi...-Fluff#Version 0.3):

Comments: No surprise. This card did not work with the wl module. Even though I did blacklist the ssb module, it did come back again when the b44 module loaded. Most likely a script will be needed like what was done for ndiswrapper so that the ssb module is loaded after the wl module (modified script based on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wi...-Fluff#Version 0.3):

Well, the 4320 card is labeled as a 4306 and it is an older card. I removed all the possible modules (b43, b43legacy, b44, ssb, ndiswrapper, wl) and then I loaded wl. No luck. The module was there, but the driver would not work. lshw -C network did not show any drivers and dmesg had nothing to report.

This message almost looks like you were not in the directory where the Makefile is located. From the "No rule to make target `linux`. Stop" message, it looks like you were in /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.22-14-generic instead of hybrid_wl.
