    There are a couple of things you can try.

    the first thing is to check if v4l driver is present on your system. Go to synaptic and seach for these 3 programmes
    xserver-xorg-video-v4l
    libpt-1.10.10-plugins-v4l
    libpt-1.10.10-plugins-v4l2
    The version numbers may vary but not be less than these.
    If they are installed or not, then install/reinstall them.
    These are the ones I have in mine Ubuntu Hardy Heron 32bit

    You may need to reboot your computer again then use
    dsmeg
    in a terminal to see if your device has registered correctly.

    Failing this you can download the latest v4l driver and install it yourself which I will help you with as I have had to do it on previous versions.

    I checked with synaptic and all the three programmes are installed. But with dmesg I get the following again. Pls tell me what to do next...

    run dmesg in terminal and see if card=117 no need to post results just say if it works. if it has then start me-tv

    It looks like you will have to install the driver manually
    To ensure the driver compiles correctly you will need to check that you have the kernel headers installed
    search for kernel in synaptic and you should see something like this
    linux-headers-2.6.24-19
    Download the driver from
    http://linuxtv.org/hg/v4l-dvb/archive/tip.tar.gz this will start a download of the driver.
    download it to your desktop and right click it and extract it there.

    open a terminal and change into the v4l directory by using the cd command
    cd /home/yourname/Desktop/v4lfoldername

    then run these commands to compile a new driver and install the driver. Please check the output from these commands to ensure there are no errors
    make
    Then as root
    sudo make install
    if it has installed correctly reboot your computer and use dmesg in a terminal to check output.
    if it is card =117 and firmware found ok then start up me-tv or kaffeine to watch tv.

    Sorry to inform you that after doing everything you suggested, still I have no card detected and get this following info from dmesg:

    Hi tarasin,
    just wanted to inform you that I deleted all those files, reinstalled all of them (as you explained) once again, rebooted the machine - still same results.

    Just curious: I'm using an EDGE modem (USB), Could it be that, that thing is using any DMA or IRQ channels? I personally don't know anything much about them, but in Windows they created problems at times, so I had to change slots.

    I dont think it would as linux assigns the channels for devices its possible I suppose.
    I had an idea if you still have the live cd then why not run it and see if dmesg gives the correct card number and also install me-tv into the live cd and see if it plays.

    After booting with the Live-CD I get the following:

    I guess it is the same result.
