[SOLVED] Shutdown Applet Hangs system

A weird problem has popped up in the past two days. Whenever I

click on the Shutdown button on the gnome-panel, The system hangs.

Mouse is stuck. Ctrl-Alt-backspace is the only solution.

This has made reboot,suspend and hibernate virtually impossible.

I tried this but in vain : sudo dpkg-reconfigure gnome-applets

Please Help

I had disabled evolution alarm manager at the startup which was causing the problem.

Now solved.
