rtsp frustration Hardy 8.04

I've hit the pull my hair out point. I've spent hours trying to get rtsp files to play in Firefox (or out of Firefox) and just can't seem to manage it. I've read every how-to, etc that I could find in these forums and have followed instructions carefully. I have installed both mplayer and Realplayer and plugins for Firefox. Still when I click on a link on say cspan.org it still tries to default to Totem. I've tried changing the associations but can't seem to find an executable for either mplayer or real.

Removing the packet totem-mozilla usually does the trick...
