    CD in drive, but Ubuntu says no medium found :-(

    My computer has two cd drives: a cd/dvd rom drive, and a cd-rw drive. When I put a cd in my cd/dvd rom drive, everything works well. The cd appears on my desktop and in file broswer and I have no trouble accessing the contents of the disc, or playing audio cds. My cd-rw drive, on the otherhand, does not want to behave. If I put a cd-r inside of it, Brasero reports "no disc" and will not burn. If I put a regular data cd inside of it, the cd does not show up in file browser (the cd-rw drive is in file browser, but it doesn't show the cd. It only says "cd-rw drive"). When I try to mount it, either in file browser, or in terminal, ubuntu says no medium found. I know there is medium in the drive. I put it there!

    I had a similar problem before with my other drive, but that was my own fault. I didnt realize my cd was bad. This time, however, I put the same data cd in both drives. My cd/dvd rom will behave properly, but the same disc is not recognized in my cd-rw drive.

    My question to the ubuntu community is: What steps should I take to diagnose the problem? Why won't ubuntu mount my cds? The drive was working before I switched to ubuntu. I doubt the drive has a problem. Any advice?

    If it helps, here is the output from my /ect/fstab

    # /etc/fstab: static file system information.
    #
    # <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
    proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
    # /dev/sda1
    UUID=a5716e71-cff2-4a12-be80-0ae76a3d2e49 / ext3 relatime,errors=remount-ro 0 1
    # /dev/sda5
    UUID=33da9863-d8de-4021-a18c-c6ad9fe267b6 none swap sw 0 0
    /dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0
    /dev/scd1 /media/cdrom1 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0
    /dev/fd0 /media/floppy0 auto rw,user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0
    scd0 is my cd/dvd drive. scd1 is my cd-rw drive. Does anything look wrong in my fstab? If not, what other things can I do to diagnose this problem? Any help would be appreciated.

    Update:

    I also remembered previously using lshw to diagnose a problem with a cd drive. Don't know if this is any help, but here is what my hardware looks like:

    Re: CD in drive, but Ubuntu says no medium found :-(

    Update:

    I was thinking of ways to rule out whether the drive is just bad. I thought If I booted with a knoppix live cd, maybe it would detect the cd drive differently, and I could access my cdrw drive. Well, I cant mount the cd drive in knoppix either. It recognizes the drive there. In the k control center, it lists two cd rom drives, one capable of writing and rewriting cds. But in the shell, when I try to mount the cd-rw drive, it says "no medium found".

    What do you all think? Could it be that my cd-rw drive is broken? I have another computer with a cdrw drive. I could switch out my current cd-rw drive for the other to see if ubuntu can get the other drive to work, but I don't want to open my computer up until I know for sure that there is no problem with the configuration or something simple like that. My spare computer is supposed to stay on all day to run my streaming audio server. What do you think? Is it time I open up my computer and put a new drive in, or is there anything else I can try to get my cds to mount?
