HOWTO: Download Youtube Videos w/o conversion

I am sure that many of you have saw a Youtube video that you wanted to keep, but you don't know how. Well, it is pretty simple:

    1. Open Firefox
    2. Browse to a Youtube video you want to keep
    3. Wait for the video to load entirely
    4. Navigate to /tmp
    5. look for a file with flash in it
    6. Right-click on the file, copy, then paste onto desktop/home folder
    7. Try to open the new flash file with Movie Player/Totem
    8. Movie Player/Totem will ask to install additional codecs, allow it to
    9. Attempt to play the video again. If it plays, everything worked out well.

You may wish to rename the video file to something more recognizable because the default name is hard to remember. This is my first guide, so if you have any suggestions, post them.

    Suggested by Rhubarb:

"It's also possible to use a nice CLI program called youtube-dl

    Code:
    sudo aptitude install youtube-dl
Then just run it like so:

    Code:
    youtube-dl http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ke-kel9zOFo
And you've got it in your home directory.
There are also some good command line switches you can use for it too.
Just run man youtube-dl for details of usage."

    Suggested by aashay:

"I find the videos in my ff profile's cache folder @ ~/.mozilla/firefox/[profile]/cache
Just sort the listing by date. The video you just viewed will be at the bottom with a nice thumbnail to match it"

    Thanks for the suggestions guys!

    Worked like a charm, thanks!

If you don't use Adobe Flash Player, you can still download Youtube videos, but not through this method. You would need to use the website www.downloadyoutubevideos.com.

Also, the original HOWTO can be used for all other websites with Flash video.
I try to treat the cause, not the symptom. I avoid the terminal in instructions, unless it's easier or necessary. My instructions will work within the Ubuntu system, instead of breaking or subverting it. Those are the three guarantees to the helpee.
