I believe what you are referring to is network bridging right? For example you have a wireless laptop and you want to connect the ps3 to your laptop by ethernet cable. Your laptop then sends internet traffic through the ethernet port to you ps3.
If this is the case, I have done this on my Xbox360 using a crossover cable, which is critical. The IP masquerade command is then issued. But I don't know exactly how the ps3 sends and receives traffic compared to the 360. Check out this post http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=508145
Be careful about editing your rc.local and ALWAYS backup.
