    Just to update, it's clear that (inexplicably) the SSH server is now working just fine, except for the fact that I screwed up the authorization keys.

    I just ssh'd into the server using puTTY on my Windows box. It's only the Ubuntu-running laptop, where I was doing all the fiddling with the keys, that can't access it.

    on your client (steve), run the following commands:
    Code:
    mv /home/steve/.ssh/known_hosts /home/steve/.ssh/old_hosts
    touch /home/steve/.ssh/known_hosts
    then try to reconnect.

    after connecting and disconnecting, take a look at the difference between /home/steve/.ssh/known_hosts and /home/steve/.ssh/old_hosts so you can see what went wrong.

    OK, well -- it seems to be working properly now. Not quite sure how that happened!

    Thanks for all the help, looks like I'm back in business.
