    Best opensource graphical image editor/creator

I'm looking for something that would be as good or near as good as Adobe's Photoshop that I could start graphic designing with.

Out of curiosity, why don't you want to use GIMP?

I don't like the way it displays things in their own separate window

I'm almost positive there is a way to change that now in 2.4.

Try Pixel, it would truely be a photoshop-killer if some of the bugs would get fixed and other features added. The one thing that prevents me from getting the full version is the text tool bug.

Photoshop 7 and CS2 run great under WINE. You have to have a few extra fonts installed, but thats really nothing major.

I would use photoshop, but I really don't like the high price and I don't want to steal anything else off the internet.

Plus I'm trying to use as much opensource software as possible.

I certainly wasn't implying anything like that. The only difference between the trial version and the full version is
    1) a nag dialog box.
    2) trail version watermark.

other than that everything is the same. I understand it is not open source(that would be awesome), but it is imo the closest cross-platform photoediting software that is even close to photoshops capabilities. It is written with SDL(a big thumbs up here).

If you want open source, you might as well cross your fingers and hope that Paint.NET will run under WINE much better in the future. That's the only other choice you really have that I know of that wont be a disappointment. And since there are still plenty of bugs running it under WINE, well you might just have to settle for GIMP then. GIMPShop makes it similar to photoshop or try the 2.4 like Merk stated above.
