    GIMP GIMP GIMP!

Though InkScape is really good for vectors. But my preference leans toward GIMP.

Use CS2 on WINE. Should solve your problems. Gimp is OK too. I've created plenty of my Myspace smileys using Gimp. Smileys and icons are lacking a bit of gloss though.

In the GIMP try going into File>Preferences, there you will see a section called Window Management. Once you select this you will see something that says "Window Manager Hints" Select Keep Above for form select menus and that would do it.

Oh also make sure you check the Focus box (Active the focused image) and the Window Positions box(Save windows positions on exit). While you are in Preferences you might also want to take a look at the Color Management section.

There are also tons of plugins for the GIMP that give you much of Photoshop functionality.

If you need any help using the GIMP check out the online tutorial:
    http://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-pimping...p-prefs-dialog

For illustration use inkscape, if you have not installed it run this on your terminal(command line tool)

    sudo apt-get install inkscape

Best graphical applications from synaptic in ubuntu:
    GIMP
    Inkscape
    Blender
If you can not get what you want from this trio, is going to be difficult.

Do you want one window in GIMP? maximize the working window and use right button from you mouse to access the tools, it is that simple. remember that it is not the application but the user's abilities. cheers!.

I just installed GIMP 2.4.5 to take a look at it.

It says it is limited to 8 bit color; that eliminates it from the list of software for serious image editing.

I have PS CS3 but haven't figured out how to get it to work in Wine yet.

AND you can't do CMYK, which I think is a bigger blow to being 'software for serious image editing'.

Photoshop CS3 does not (yet) work in WINE.
    Photoshop CS2 does however
If the only reason you think your software is better is because it's FOSS, you need to write better software

    Merk42,
who said that GIMP can't do CMYK?
GIMP already can do CMYK and support Color Profile, just search plugins: Separate+

i am is a long time Photoshop user since 3.0 then since i move to Linux, GIMP was never satisfied me, the closest one is Gimpshop but it based on old GIMP 2.2 then i make my own GIMP modification but based on new GIMP 2.4 and i call it GimPhoto.

so if you want free Photoshop alternative for Linux then maybe you can consider to use GimPhoto for Linux that just released.
if you not familiar with GimPhoto, this is a short description about it:

    GimPhoto is GIMP modification that:
    - based on new stable GIMP 2.4.
    - new menu layout like PS.
    - new shortcuts like PS.
    - CMYK separation.
    - Layer Effects.
    - new brushset and gradientset.
    - packed with 20+ plugins and scripts to fill missing PS function on GIMP.
for example: Save for Web, Slice for Web, Batch Process, etc.
    - packed with many photographic filters like Noise Reduction, B/W and IR.

for more detailed information, go to http://www.gimphoto.com

i hope you can enjoy it, like me... (^___^)=b

Also, GIMP 2.6 (the next version) will actually support CMYK and more color depths through GEGL. See here.

I don't like the way it displays things in their own separate window
    Is this your serious answer?

    Oh wait I need CMYK
Because web-design/user-interface/game graphics/non-print medium requires CMYK amirite? LAWL
