Question Install Ubuntu server with GUI?

    Hi,
Could someone please let me know how to install ubuntu server with a gui? I've given it a try, yet i think i did something wrong as when the gui loads, my screen can't display the resolution (does linux not have a low default res?) and when i go to the cosole, the screen does not scroll down to follow my inputs.

If someone has a start to finish install method. i'd like to start over and get this right.

Servers were designed to run and be built without a GUI. If you wanted a GUI, you should just install the default Ubuntu CD, as it comes with everything needed and you don't have to set it all up.

Re: Instal ubuntu server with gui?

    when doesn't the GUI load?

Are you talking about during the actual install as I had this issue when insalling to an old iBook and had to adjust the xorg config.

However, if you have installed, you should only be getting a text prompt.

To install a minimal gui you could

    Code:
    sudo apt-get update
    Code:
    sudo apt-get upgrade
    Code:
sudo apt-get install gdm xorg xterm icewm menu gksu synaptic
    Code:
    sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
    Code:
    /etc/init.d/gdm start

    Right,
So you're telling me that to run a game server... I should use the desktop version.

Not having a GUI makes it much harder to manage servers. I know it makes it slower to have a GUI, but i'm sure a basic GUI wouldn't add that much to it. Certanly worth it when you think about the increased ability to manage and setup the server.

EDIT - I'll give that method a try and let you know if it worked.

Cool Re: Instal ubuntu server with gui?

    These

    xterm icewm

    are lightweight window managers

or you could install the regular Gnome desktop

    Code:
    sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
If at first you don't succeed - just buy the company and tell them to make the one you want.

Not really, you're just unfamiliar with it

Re: Instal ubuntu server with gui?

After following your instructions i get the following:

    *Starting GNOME Display Manager... [fail]
Any suggestions as to why this failed?

If you want something lightweight then, install xorg, xterm and openbox.
