Do you have the Windows codecs package (called w32codecs) installed? If not, then just add the Medibuntu repository to your software sources list and then install this package.
This is a great link that many use to get set up it has 32-64 bit instructions read carefully.

This program is able to play anything. You can find VLC in the repositories. If it cannot play that file, then the file itself is corrupted.
