Thumbs down Can laptop CD drive be replaced by a HDD?

An Acer Ferrari 4005wlmi laptop has the following CD/DVD IDE drive with a thickness of about 13 mm:

Can this be replaced by an IDE 2.5'' HDD?

If an adaptor of some kind is required, where do I get one?

Details of the rest of the system: http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=2476

Just wondering, are you sure you want to do that? CD drives usually act as the "safety net" if something goes wrong on your hard drive, like installing a new os. (Sure, there are flash drives, although some BIOSes don't support booting from them.)

What might be easier for you is to just purchase an external USB 2.0 hard drive, or an external case, then purchase the hard drive.

It boots from an external USB CD/DVD drive so it's ok.

Correcting the first post, it is in fact about 13 mm thick.

Knowing Acer, It's probably a specialized adapter. But I could be wrong...

Looking at just a single laptop hard drive here, it's height (if that's what you meant) is well below 14mm, so at least it can fit into the slot. In terms of it shaking around though, I think you might have to get McGuyver-ish. Maybe cutting out some foam (although bad for ventilation,) could help it sit properly and prevent it from bending anything.

I'm confused about IDE sockets, what should they look like in this laptop?

Here's a picture from another product:

You could try pulling out the CD drive and the HDD (you do still have an internal HDD, right?) And comparing the two. Usually they will have adapter specifications on a sticker, too.
