I'm using Ubuntu 7.10 on a Dell Latitude D610. When I try to burn a data cd using Nautilus, the familiar dialog box for burning has the write speed on maximum. It is unchangeable and grayed out. I always want to burn at slower speeds to get a good disk.

Well, ok, so I burn the CD anyway. It burns successfully and ejects the disk. Being somewhat paranoid, I read the CD back. Sure enough, about 7 files out of 50 are unreadable with unexpected file lengths.

Why would the write speed be stuck on maximum?
