Question Help this Microsoft monkey boy convert to UBUNTU

    Hey Y'all,

I want to make the leap from Windows XP to Ubuntu.

I've installed Ubuntu onto one of my home PCs and most of the OS is pretty intuitive... but I still keep getting stuck in parts of UBUNTU b/c I am treating the program like its windows. For example, I keep looking for an "apply" button.

Anywho, are there any web links or tips y'all could point me to that help new users get their brains out of Microsoft OS mode.

    Hope I made sense here...

Welcome Monkeyboy, ahem, I mean er sirbingo.

Hmmmmm, that is an interesting point, and you're probably in the best place right now. In fact the homepage that firefox would have offered you as default is a gateway to just about anything ubuntu. I do recall seeing some links among the official ubuntu pages dedicated to helping people make the transition, but I can't account for them, as I'm very much a jump-in-at-the-deep-end kind of person.

It's certainly worth checking those links out, but I think the best advice would be to explore your new environment, and look for specific answers when questions arrise, since, you could read about your new OS all day long, but you will learn far more by exploring, experimenting and when you're stuck, there are more folk than you could shake a stick at on these forums ready and willing to help.

    Good luck, and best wishes.

The best way to learn is to run into problems and fix them. So these forums are invaluable as a learning tool. Even if there are no specific things you are struggling with, it can be very helpful to just browse through and learn.

Also make sure you read the official help pages https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/

And after that the community wiki pages should answer most other questions you have: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/

Also the Ubuntu guide can be an interesting (if lenghthy) thing to read through http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Hardy

EDIT: Oh yes, and anyone new to ubuntu should always read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo

Hi, if you want to click an "apply" button when you save your changes, try out KDE. However, I wouldn't recommend Kubuntu for it. Try OpenSUSE with KDE 3.5 (or 4, which isn't up to speed yet).

Also, here's a good site for beginners if there's some things you want to know how to do:
    http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/index.php
    Code:
while true; do echo -n "RiceMonster "; done

    Hi sirbingo,

    it's not only you.

many people here are also Gnome monkeys or KDE monkeys.

linux has an interface for every kind of user needs.

the best way to get used to linux is trying out some different interfaces (window managers)

you could try out gnome, kde, xfce, e17, etc.

when you get a bit more experienced you could try out blackbox

testing and comparing different distros also help

the more you experience the better. Linux is a huge world.

you've been trapped in a small island for a long time (only windows)
When close to achieving you quit! If you don't try you failed. Real Winners are not afraid of losing.
