Well, I'm stumped. I've been through the forum many times and seen some reports of sound problems with this system, and others saying it worked out of the box. My Vostro 1700 with Intel HDA sound card does not work -- no sound. It works with Fedora 8. KInfoCenter report on sound card detection attached.
Card seems to be detected. This is a fresh install of Kubuntu 8.04 -- not an upgrade. Any of the posts with regard to kernel issues are now out of date, as I am running 2.6.24-19-generic.
I checked KMix under Fedora 8 on this machine, then booted into Kubuntu 8.04 and checked KMix again, making settings in both identical. No sound.
Tried alsamixer. It works fine, but no sound.
Tried alsaconf and got 'command not found' and same with alsaconfig.
Don't know what to do anymore. Any help appreciated.
Thanks.
Frank.
PS: Just added the KInfoCenter report as shown by Fedora 8 on this same machine (or tried to add it). Most is the same, but Fedora is using IRQ 21.
