Ok, some people have trouble with their audigy cards that when the analog/digital box in their sound mixer is checked, they are unable to record. Make sure that the mic in the sound mixer is enabled and turned up, also the capture and mic boost if you have one these. You can check with the Pulseaudio Volume meter (capture) to see if pulseaudio is using the mic as a source.

Also, using windows is not really definitive for checking these things as windows can and does rearrange the connections to your sound card.
I use the analog for sound. Is that a problem? Also I have no pulseaudio volume meter (capture) only playback and recording

    Is the box checked?
    have you tried unchecking it?

Hmm..perhaps the pa volume meter (capture) is hidden in your menus, did you look?

You can fix that, and possibly your other problems, by following the OP and the links.

You probably need to reboot before you go further so all the changes you are making can be consolidated.

    hey,
i have a compaq presario v3000, with the intel corporation 82801G(ICH7 family) High Definition Audio Controller(rev 02).
i recently installed ubuntu 8.04 and the sound is totally gone.it used to work on 7.10 as well as xp.
i get a red cross mark on the volume control icon on the top right panel and on clicking it gives "no volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found"... so i cant do all the things mentioned in the posts.
i have installed linux i386 and all the other related deb packages.

    i have done
    sudo aptitude install build-essential libncurses-dev gettext linux-headers-'uname -r'
    sudo apt-get install module-assistant alsa-source
sudo aptitude install linux-ubuntu-modules- 'uname -r'linux-genric. nothing has worked .

Most likely you need to reinstall alsa since it does not seem to be finding your sound card which is a fairly common ICH7. Since you upgraded, there may be some old configuration files which were left behind which you may have to remove. I don't know much about that.

To help you figure out what is going on follow this guide:

    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting

The module you need is most likely snd_hda_intel with some option. Look in these links for that:

Re: [SOLVED] Multiple Sound Solution (ALSA w Pulseaudio)

Hey, thanks so much for the Howto, especially about getting Pulse and JACK to play nice.

Just wanted to share, I've been playing around myself, and instead of starting
    Code:
    jackd -d alsa
as suggested in one of your links, I find it better to setup qjackctl to startup with the system, running a startup script which kills pulse if it happens to be running, and then loads the correct modules. I thought I'd have to start pulseaudio after that, but I think the fact that I'm using pamanager already does that for me.

So anyway, what I'm doing is setting up Jack using qjackctl, then under 'Setup' in qjackctl I click 'Start JACK audio server on application startup' and create a link to qjackctl in my Sessions.

Will be testing out this setup over the next week or so. No need to boot to windows to record anymore, hopefully.

EDIT: Instead of killing pulse on startup (which seems to have caused problems in the case of JACK crashing on me), I now kill it after shutdown. Under 'Setup', for scripts to execute after shutdown, I put 'killall jackd pulseaudio'
