Do you have it set to shutdown when battery reaches a certain point/a certain time of inactivity. Go under System > Administration > Screen Saver and then click on advanced and make sure everything is long enough.

This may or may not have anything to do with it but, while you're not 'on the move' all the time, you might not need your battery all the time. Here is how to take care of it. If you're rather broke like me, you'll find it interesting in the long run:

Compiled 2.6.17-rc1 with the ck patch, and it's much much faster. However, the display doesn't work when X is not running (boot, ctrl+alt+F*, and shutdown), which is bothersome because I need to install the NVIDIA drivers. Anyone got any ideas?

Re: How-To: 2.6.14 Vanilla Kernel (latest) + ck Patchset (Enhanced Performance kernel

Applying the cks patch to the 2.6.16 kernel results in the system hanging during shutdown and the keyboard and mouse freezing. I have no problems with a vanilla kernel (currently using 2.6.16.5).

EDIT: This problem does not appear with the ck patch.

Thanks, will try compiling it again...hopefully it'll work this time. Will edit post once i'm done with results.

And xyz, thanks for that tip, i'll keep it bookmarked.

Re: How-To: 2.6.14 Vanilla Kernel (latest) + ck Patchset (Enhanced Performance kernel

I got mine compiled and it's running great. FINALLY fixed the problem I was having with the nvidia driver basically halting my system when X was closed. However, some new problems have cropped up (like it was unexpected, hah). My CDROM drives (one CD-RW, one DVD-RW) don't work, and nothing appears at boot up. Other minor problems are my USB drive doesn't want to automount, but that's ok, I can just use pmount. Kind of annoying though. I have been digging through my system and google searching for answers but I'm coming up empty handed..
Here's some relevant output from dmesg regarding the cdrom issue:

Those two lines saying ATAPI is disabled sound like the culprit.. but I have no idea what to do about that. Any help?

Second issue, with usplash not working, seems to be fairly common. But it really kind of bothers me. I don't know if my system froze up or if it's still booting. So I did some poking around, and found out there is no vesafb.ko module in /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/ . Not in initrd either. The initrd folder doesn't even exist, unlike the rest of the kernels on my system. What's up with that? I compiled with the -initrd flag?
I tried looking up how to compile kernel modules, so I could try to compile vesafb.ko myself, and it seemed a bit out there (although doable), so I don't know if that would even work or not. I don't like kernel panics much..

Well I'm new at all this kernel stuff, but I'm learning fast (or would like to think so ). I'd like to fix this without having to recompile the whole kernel again, but if that's what needs to be done, so be it. I just like learning how to do things instead of just redoing it all differently.

Maybe you could try compiling a newer kernel ? You compilied 2.6.14 while the newest version is 2.6.16.7. The problem you are having is most likely fixed.

Re: How-To: 2.6.14 Vanilla Kernel (latest) + ck Patchset (Enhanced Performance kernel

Oh actually it was version 2.6.16, which I patched with cks4. Maybe I should try to compile just the vanilla kernel first? So many configurations, so many patch sets, so much to learn.. ahh!

edit: Well I compiled another one... 2.6.16-ck5.. it's no better. And now mplayer, xmms, anything that requires the sound system I guess segfaults. Maybe it had to do with the OSS settings in the .config. Oh, and now usb-storage won't shut up in dmesg, it's eating cpu resources and repeating the same message over and over, many times a second:

    I'm trying to install 2.6.16 + ck6 patch but I get this:

    Code:
    root@lunatic:/usr/src# sudo bzcat /home/neurolunatic/Desktop/patch-2.6.16-ck6.bz2 | patch -pl
patch: **** strip count l is not a number
What the hell? Can anybody help me with this?

Edit: OK. I wrote l instead of 1.
