[SOLVED] login fails with dual boot

Because of constant freeze up of Hardy probably due to a damaged hard drive I installed Gutsy as a second boot. The install was from f12 at the startup the option was text this may be the problem. At login it wont let me log in with the name or password which is the same for Hardy and all my computers. It is possible that I miss typed something but I was very careful. What is the process to change the name and password at startup.

Thanks I don't know what happened I have been only using Dapper to Hardy for about 2 years. This has never happened to me so when ever I saw this problem with others it was explained with directions rather then a web page that addresses it. So I never saved the information fearing I might harm rather than help someone.
