    not sure, I'll have to go back and look at that.

    I did finally get this working. I've mentioned that on other threads I think. I've got threads going at Yahoo! Answers, on three different listservs and on LaunchPad so it's hard to keep up! But KDE does have the same issue.

    Yes, I can create new users and they all have this issue.

    As an aside, I've also not had consistent Internet while I've been moving, so that's made remembering what I say where and what I've done even more problematic because I can work on it in a continuous period.

    All that does is make it such that I can't log in as root from the log in screen and changes what it looks like. I mean, there may be other things it does, but that's all I see. I still get the same error about the authorization file.

    While you've had a reply to change ownership of your home directory, have you set correct ownership of .Xauthority? Also, make sure that it is writable.
    Code:
    # chown username:groupname /home/user/.Xauthority
    # chmod u+rw /home/user/.Xauthority
    To run KDE by default, modify ~/.dmrc and set Session to kde
    Code:
    [Desktop]
    Session=kde
    Language=en

    Just tried that. Didn't help. Is the .Xauthority file something I can look at and change setting on or something I can replace with a default somewhere? Does gdm act as a user? Do I need to get gdm access to .Xauthority?

    It just occured to me that .Xauthority should not exist when you're not logged in to X. Delete it, then make sure you have read/write/execute permissions on your home directory.
    Code:
    chmod u+rwx /home/user
    .Xauthority is a binary file containing login info. It's used (among others) by gksudo.

    ok, deleting the .Xauthority file makes it such that I get an error I used to get

    Code:
    Your session only lasted less than 10 seconds. If you have not logged out yourself, thus could mean that there is some installation problem or that you may be out of disk space. Try loggin in with one of the failsafe sessions to see if you can fix this problem.

    *box* view details (~/.xsession-errors file)

    and that errors file says...

    Code:
    /etc/gdm/Xsession:Beginning session setup...
    setting IM through im-switch for locale=en_US.
    start IM through /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/all_ALL linked to /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/default
    mkdtemp: private socket dir: Permission denied

    See if you now log in into the failsafe session. If so wait at least 20 second and logout. See if you can log in now.

    Nope, new error though!

    lots of touchy feely stuff, then:

    The error was "Failed to create file '/tmp/gconf-test-locking-file-3MOFDU' Permission denied" (errno = 13)
    So, now to test the permissions on the /tmp dir...

    Re: can't log in except as root - lots of error messages

    I had this same problem on two separate machines after updating to the newest kernel....

    To fix it, I logged in as root, started X, went to my home directory and checked the permissions. They were all off. Somehow, doing it from the gui fixed it but when I did chmod and chown nothing happened.
    it seems fine now.
    it also gave me a disk usage error but my disk usage was fine...
