network problems comaq c700

hi,
i have a computer running windows and it's connected to the internet. i have another pc with 8.04 installed and it connects to the internet through the windows pc and it works just fine.
i recently installed 8.04 on a compaq c700 laptop, but it can't connect to the internet. i can't even browse the windows pc in my network, which works just fine with my ubuntu desktop.
i tried setting a static IP and tried ping and i get responses from both PCs.
can anybody help me with this problem? all the solutions i seem to find is concerned with wireless connection.

I used the directions here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...highlight=c700. It showed up the wireless, but still would not connect to ATT. I had to configure the network point to point setting with my username and password before ATT DSL would let me on.
