It is becoming indeed more and more my believe that this could be the case

I begin to rule out running under batteries (power management modules?)... My notebook just crashed again under AC. Temperature probed CPU: ~60°C, GPU: ~64°C.

Mine only crashed under AC (have not tested whether it also happens when running on batteries).
The indicated temperatures where they -- compared to "normal" running conditions -- high or just about average? Since the temperatures that you indicate are about the temperatures I am having during "normal" operating conditions.

If I am running a "heavy" graphical application both temperatures easily run up to ~80°C and sometimes even higher.

The same thing happens to me.

I'm running Hardy on Acer Travelmate 660 (Intel 1.4, Intel 855GM graphics and Intel wireless) and before the last update (Kernel 2.6.24-19-generic) everything worked perfectly, absolutely no issues.

After the update, my system is COMPLETELY UNUSABLE!!!

I'm getting hangs on everything. Random program crashes, Segmentation faults, X resets, X freezing, complete system freezing, even GDM sometimes crashes. The SysRq keys sometime work and sometime the only solution is hard-reset.

I've ran Memcheck and it reported no errors. Also, before the update there were no crashes. I've tried downgrading to 2.6.24-18-generic but it's the same. I don't know what else got upgraded so I cannot revert to test.

I've also tried both intel and i810 driver and it makes no difference.

Note that I had this problem first with an Emachine w/ AMD XP 2000 and later with a very old Dell Optiplex PIII, so I do not think it is just Dell Hardware. The common link between them was I switched the wireless card from one to the other.

The disc is checked almost daily because of the constant reboots. I always let it finish the checking.

I've also tried disabling all the extensions and plugins (and starting firefox with -safe-mode) but as far as I can tell, it's NOT a firefox problem. Different programs keep crashing and it's always segmentation fault. I have prevously removed the -18 and earlyer kernels, but I've reinstalled the -18 and it behaves the same so I suspect that some other component (library) needs to get rolled back, I just don't know which.

I love Ubuntu and hate windows....but for the time being I am very glad to be able to use XP, which is ugly and unconvenient but undoubtly STABLE

Yes... I agree... I pointed this out to share that I don't think this is temperature related. Someone mentioned in a similar-topic thread that the Kernel panic could be due to overheating.

Well... WXGA is an identifier for the graphics mode (resolution) that a computer runs... Basically it locates you within a timeline and resolution parameters... When it came to graphics adapters, CGA was the pioneer (Color Graphics Adapter, legendary 320x200 and 640x200, up to 16 colors)... then others like EGA (640x350, 16-64 colors), VGA (640x480, 256 color), and so on until XGA (Extended Graphics Adapter, 1024x768, millions of colors)... others evolved eventually... the W in WXGA stands for Wide... this is used to address Widescreens... 1440 resolution is sometimes referred to as WXGA+

It's all about graphics resolutions.

As for the crashing... try under battery operation... nevertheless, yesterday I got 2 crashes... all under AC.

So now I begin to forget about battery/AC power-management issues. Still looking for a clue in logs.

I think this is not merely UBUNTU-related. I've read other distros have similar problems... I think it is Kernel version related.

I agree. GUTSY doesn't seem to have this problems... You could try settling back to it until it's solved. I won't.

And yes... I still keep a Windows partition just in case.
