How safe is the Update Manager?

So I just installed ubuntu 7.10 this morning (from an old CD) and got it working. There are 219 updates in the update manager. Is it safe to install them all like one would with windows update?

I read the generic warning about the security risk but how would one know what is safe to update and what is not?

    Thanks.

    It's safe, install them.

(there are reasons why you shouldn't update sometimes, but I doubt that will be the case with you)

    If I might ask:

Why did you install an old version of Ubuntu instead of the current version 8.04?

Unless you know for a fact that there was an update you didn't want, you should be perfectly safe doing the update.

Probably the same reason as to why I'm holding off on installing 8.04: waiting for some of the bugs to be worked around.

I've experienced no bugs with 8.04

Anyway, this is a different topic

To the OP - yes it's safe to install those updates

No bugs to speak of here, running 8.04 on all my machines.

Re: How safe is the Update Manager?

    BillGoldberg,

I installed this version because 1) I am a noob 2) I had this CD and specific direction (including command lines) on how to install Nagios 3) I am a noob

Did I mention this is all new to me?

Ultimately I'm looking for a cost effective network / system management / monitoring tool. I heard Nagios may be a potential solution but I have zero *nix experience so having detailed directions was a requirement.

Thank you everyone for your replies!
