Exact Total Number of Ubuntu Users in the World

Have you ever wondered how many the Ubuntu users are there in the world?

Is it possible to count the exact number of Ubuntu users in the world?

Is it done before? or is it never been done? Is there a software that can do it?

I'm just facinated with this issue,.. so I'm encouraging everyone with creating a program or a website were in Ubuntu users will be counted. The exact number of users not just assumption with percentage of the users in the world...

Or I'm encouraging web developers to create a website were in Ubuntu users can sign-up so that they will be counted. And users can share their personal experience with Ubuntu OS. And include there to have an active community for help and support.

I'm have a dream that Ubuntu will dominate and become number 1 OS in the world someday...

I myself have not registered in the counter project. And so haven't many. Its very difficult to get even a vague relative figure.

I believe Canonical keep an eye on the number of machines (number of IPs?) that hit their repos. That's probably the closest to an actual count. I believe their figure is about 8 million.

I think currently it's estimated at between 6 and 8 million people

Considering there are around 20-48 Million Linux Users today (Note that this has never truly been counted either). And thousands upon thousands of distributions to choose from.

I would safely say that at least 7% of those probably use only Ubuntu, with maybe another 10% mixing Ubuntu with other OS's.

Not forgetting to mention the main point. That almost all users have at least two different OS' installed (I have Ubuntu, 64Studio and Gentoo). This can, and infact, does vagues the numbers even more.

But looking at Debian and family as a whole (Debian, Xandros, Ubuntu, EeePC, etc, etc.) then I can imagine seeing something like 30-40% of users use a Debian or Debian deriative, since Debian is the platform of choice for most developers (By something like a 13% majority, I remember reading somewhere) and is favoured by businesses.

Though this may change very soon. Since there has been some wonderful news from Brazil! They have started to phase out all Windows machines in schools and have opted to lay down hundreds of thousands of computers all with a Debian deriative OS in them. Numbers estimated are that the Linux population will indefinately double over the next two years (Considering that there are around 52Million Brazilians in school/college at this very moment).

53,000 individual computer labs, 825,000 instalations and the distro is called Linux Educacional 2.0 (no, that isn't a spelling mistake, look it up).

But all in all, the only accurate counter we really have is the numbers of Distrowatch. Which aren't really that accurate at all.
